This past weekend, saw a few folks out on Tunkwa fishing through the ice. For the most part, reports were good to excellent, with anglers getting into fish. People fishing in areas that weren’t holding trout, obviously weren’t catching them! As always don’t hesitate to stop in the office and ask where the bight has been, and what the best presentation has been. We are always glad to help!

There are some slushy parts on the lake, and best to avoid them to keep your feet dry, if you stay in the shallows or the bays, you will find conditions ideal, and fish actively feeding back in there. Morning and later afternoon has seen the best action, as it seems from 11am-2:30pm, the bight just goes off.
Best presentation has been Pink or Green/Chart, glow-in-the-dark jigs(we’re just loving the new Larva Jigs from VMC!!) tipped with just a small piece of worm. I often will run a hookless spoon about a foot above the jig, mainly to attract the trout over to inspect the jig. On Friday, I had good success fishing a Pink/Silver SlabRap lure(made by Rapala), aggressively snapping it up and letting it free flutter back down. This presentation really called the trout in for a look see! If they wouldn’t hit the SlabRap, I’d pull it out and quickly drop down a jig/worm combo, and more times then not, they would hit it. Great fun watching this happen under your feet! Fishing has been best in 7′-10′ of water.

If you want to experience some of the best ice fishing action of the season, this is the time of the year to get out!!

See you on the ice,
Al.
